A HISTORY OF ANIMATION
The roots of animation go back thousands of years, with drawings and other methods used to tell stories. Cave painting, shadow puppets and vase paintings are the inception of modern animation.
Before film optical toys were used to create the illusion of movement. Look us these methods and see how they work; phantasmagoria, magic lanterns, thaumatrope, phenakistiscope and zoetrope. |
Humorous Phases of Funny Faces is a silent cartoon by J. Stuart Blackton released in 1906. It features a cartoonist drawing faces on a chalkboard, and the faces coming to life. It is generally regarded by film historians as the first animated film.

STOP MOTION ANIMATION
"The thing is, you cant really appreciate the craft of stop motion until you observe it up close. Yes, it's slow, meticulous and painstaking. Or, as actress Helena Bonham Carter observed in Toronto, All animators are anal because its all about the detail. And when you're shooting two or three seconds of footage a day, one frame at a time with a still camera for 50 weeks, thats about as detailed and labor intensive as it gets."

Stop motion is an animation technique that physically manipulates an object so that it appears to move on its own. The object is moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a fast sequence. Dolls with movable joints or clay figures are often used in stop motion for their ease of repositioning. Stop motion animation using plasticine is called clay animation or "claymation".
Not all stop motion requires figures or models; many stop motion films can involve using humans, household appliances and other things for comedic effect. Stop motion can also use sequential drawing in a similar manner to traditional animation, such as a flip book. |
