1. Design a magazine cover to specifications 1.1. Download the magazine assets. 1.2. Using the 2. Perspectives Magazine Assets, recreate the document found in 1. Sample Copy 1.3. Using www.pixabay.com find a texture background image by searching texture. Save the image to your computer and replace it with the current front cover background.
Remember that InDesign does not store your photos in the document you create. If you download photos to your Downloads folder, use said photos in your design, then move said photos, they will disappear out of your project. It's best to store your photos (assets) in one place where they won't be moved or renamed.)
2. Vector and raster images
2.1 Using the graphic above to inform you, can you identify which files in the design assets are vectors and which are raster images?
2.2 When should you use a vector image? 2.3 When should you use a raster image? 2.4 When will it be difficult to choose?
3. Advanced level 1 (Photoshop) 3.1. Having completed the steps above, now have a go at preparing the silhouette file yourself. Locate the .jpg file from the folder 3. Advanced Stage 1. 3.2. Make a copy of the file, as it is good to make sure you are not destructively editing the original. 3.3. Bring the file into Photoshop. Using the pen, selection, and/or levels tool, isolate the subject from the background. 3.4. Now make sure that the background is no longer visible in the file.
4. Advanced level 2 (InDesign) 4.5. We could use the image as is, however, the edges are probably jagged and will be slow to load as it is a raster image. To convert this image into a vector, open the image in Adobe Illustrator 4.6. Use the livetrace tool to convert the image to a vector. Delete any white areas so you can only see black elements and the transparency grid. Now you can bring this vector into the InDesign document.
